Today is National School Librarians Day!
On April 4th each year, National School Librarian Day recognizes the professionals who keep the school library in working order. School librarians spend long hours keeping the library organized. They are also dedicated to helping our children find the resources they need to keep learning. School librarians are the people who create an environment where students can learn every day of the year. Their work is an impressive accomplishment.
Thank you to our school librarian, Alicia Johnsen for all you do!
In Pearl, you can request a free Reading Eggs account for your children and we love this program. It's important to know about the different aspects of the offerings so that you can thoughtfully decide which to prioritize for each child, based on their particular learning needs.
There are 3 main parts to the program, Reading Eggs and Reading Eggs Jr., Fast Phonics, and Reading Eggspress. I'm going to start this overview with Fast Phonics because I think it may be the least well known and most useful part of our Reading Eggs Subscription. It is also the newest branch.
Fast Phonics was added to the Reading Eggs program to meet the latest Science of Reading research that shows many children learn best through systematic, sequential, phonics based instruction that teaches explicit steps and rules to break down the English language. According to the creators, "Fast Phonics is perfect for children ages 5–10 who are just learning to read, as well as older children who are struggling at school. The highly engaging phonics games combined with motivating rewards keep kids on track and eager to improve their skills."
We highly recommend starting with Fast Phonics for any children who do not appear to be just picking up reading easily and naturally through regular exposure and instruction by the age of 5. It is helpful for older struggling readers as well. Choose Fast Phonics rather than Reading Eggs when first logging in, and support your child in completing the quick assessment. This will set them up to receive appropriate lessons any time they log in and to move through the program in a logical sequence. See a comparison to Reading Eggs below.
Reading Eggs & Reading Eggs Junior
Reading Eggs and Reading Eggs Junior were designed for early learners from pre-K through Grade 2, Reading Eggs uses a structured literacy approach that is built on the 5 elements of reading:
Reading Eggspress follows Reading Eggs or Fast Phonics after a child has learned to read. It teaches reading comprehension and English skills of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.

Welcome back PEARL Parents!
I hope you’ve had a relaxing and rejuvenating summer break. In just a week we’ll be starting a new school year. Thank you for working with your teacher this summer to prepare for this upcoming year. I know it takes a lot of preparations and planning from both parents and teachers to get the school year off to a great start. I am excited for the 2022/23 school year. Here are a couple tidbits of information.
Back To School Zoom
On August 31st we will hold two Back to School Zooms. They will be at 10 am and 6 pm. Please choose the time that fits your schedule best. We will start with a 15 min introduction of PEARL staff members. Then for your weekly contact that week, you will join your teacher in a break out session to get to know your teacher and fellow classmates. Links and more information will be sent out by teachers soon.
Chromebooks
In an effort to support families, Chromebooks will again be issued to all families who request one during the first couple weeks of school. To request a Chromebook please follow this link – Chromebook Link
Registration
Our program is currently full but we do anticipate having some openings in the near future. If you know someone interested in joining PEARL, please have them contact our Registrar- Amanda Jones at ajones@qsd48.org or 360-302-1583.
Covid-19 and PEARL
From the State Department of Health about COVID-19 health and safety requirements for this fall:
Students and staff who show symptoms of COVID-19 are required to stay home, and should get tested for COVID-19. For PEARL this would include staying home from CBI lessons, field trips or other in-person events.
Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 are required to isolate at home for 5 days. If symptoms improve and they have had no fever for the past 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, students and staff can attend CBI lessons, field trips or other PEARL events if they test negative before returning.
It is required by our local health department that students and staff returning to school or school events after their 5 days of isolation:
wear a well-fitted mask from days 6 to 10, and
remain masked for sports and other physical activities on days 6 to 10.
Students and staff who test positive after 5 days of isolation must stay at home for the full 10-day isolation period.
Schools must inform students, families, and staff when there are cases or outbreaks in the physical school or a school event. PEARL will communicate cases and outbreaks to families by phone, email, or through ClassTag.
Our state’s requirement for school employees to be fully vaccinated to protect against COVID-19 or obtain a medical or religious exemption is still in place. We are allowed to accept exemptions again.
These requirements are in place for all public and private K-12 schools and childcare facilities in Washington state. Schools and childcare facilities are required by state law to follow these guidelines.
PEARL students, Households and Community based instructors are encouraged to test as needed at home. In Washington state, you can receive free self-tests from the Say Yes! COVID Test program. Most insurance covers the costs of up to 8 self-tests per individual per month.
The COVID-19 vaccine is now available for children 6 months and older. Booster doses are also available for children 5 years and older. COVID-19 vaccination information can be found here. Covid vaccines are not required to attend PEARL.
Meet and Greet Registration and Information
This year our Meet and Greet will be at FinnRiver Farm in Chimacum on Wednesday, September 28th from 10:00-2:00. Information can be found here. Make sure you fill out a google registration form for each student attending here - Registration Form

Congratulations to Pearl Teacher Julia Kilkullen, who was awarded with this year's Excellence in Education Award by the Quilcene School Board.
Pictured from left: Board Members Jon Cooke, Trisha Freiberg, Viviann Kuehl, Pearl Teacher Julia Kilkullen, and Superintendent, Frank Redmon
Julia is a dedicated and caring teacher who goes above and beyond for the students and parents on her regular class roster and for students in the Zoom Creative Writing classes that she teaches. Julia's families adore her and many of them honored her with nominations, thanking her for her personalized attention and expertise.
We are proud to work with teachers of Ms. Julia's caliber every day. Some of you know that Ms. Julia does the majority of her work at night so she can be full-time mom to her two young boys during the daytime hours.
Thank you to everyone who submitted nominations for Pearl teachers and staff this year. And thank you to the QSD School Board for a lovely breakfast for faculty and staff.
The board expressed sincere appreciation and admiration for all of the educators recognized in this way in 2021-22.
Your kudos really do matter!
